Flag Communications, a Computershare Company, is delighted to have been given the opportunity to redesign the Computershare Change a Life website as an in-kind donation to a very worthy cause.http://www.flag.co.uk
Our 2009 Change a Life Cycle will transport 72 corporate clients to the most breathtaking places, provide the most daunting cycle challenges, create the most special camaraderie and leave behind the most intense memories…
Following the overwhelming success of our 2008 Change a Life Cycle, we’ve gone all out to wow our clients with a breathtaking sequel! This time we’ve teamed up with Rovos Rail – “the most luxurious train in the world” - to offer our clients unbridled luxury, plus an ever-changing tapestry of scenery and cycling challenges. We are thrilled that the event is already fully subscribed – proof that the Change a Life Cycle has become a must-do on the corporate cycling calendar.
Setting off from Capital Park Station on 10 September, 72 cyclists will embark on a Magical Mystery Tour for five days, journeying by night whilst reclining in luxurious carriages, and cycling by day amidst some of South Africa’s most remote and challenging cycling terrain. The daily route will be a surprise, but it will have been tried and tested by Computershare’s advance guard of expert cyclists. Each day will have its unique highlights and difficulties, with the fifth and final day providing the ultimate challenge! Back on the train at night, you will be pampered and treated to sumptuous food whilst surrounded by the lavish décor and style of a bygone era. It will truly be the journey of a lifetime.
The destination isn’t the point – but how you get there is…
Each cycle participant will pay R20 000 to enter, with all proceeds going directly to the Mike Thomson Change a Life Trust in aid of crime prevention, detection and victim support. At Computershare, we will again show our commitment to combating crime by matching all funds raised rand for rand. In 2008 we raised R4 million through our combined efforts and our aim is to even better this in 2009.
We invite all our clients, and corporate South Africa at large, to help this worthy initiative by donating funds or sponsoring elements of the Change a Life Cycle. This year we are offering four companies the opportunity to become major sponsors for the event – and we can guarantee that they will be duly recognized. Super Sport will be covering the event again, which will mean valuable TV coverage for our sponsors. Please do join us in our efforts to combat crime.
Change a Life 2008 - Beneficiaries
Our Change a Life Cycle raised almost R3 million through the Mike Thomson Change a Life Trust and its beneficiaries. Here is who they are:
The African Cycle Event is an invitation only event for directors of listed companies in South Africa.
All participants will be asked to raise a minimum of R20,000 sponsorship money in aid of charity. In order to ensure that your money is donated to our nominated beneficiaries, Computershare will match the R20,000 that you raise, rand for rand, which after covering costs of about R1 million, will be added to your sponsorship. With 70 participants in total this should ensure donations to charity in excess of R2 million.
So, if you are a director of a South African listed company, can meet the sponsorship criteria and would like to participate, we would we delighted to issue you with an invitation.
If you have any questions, please contact Linda Janse Van Rensburg on (011) 370 5362 or at linda.jansevanrensburg@computershare.co.za.
Alternatively, register online with our partner, CycleLab.
AccommodationClick here to find out more about the hotels and lodges we will be staying at during the cycle event.
PassportsAll visitors to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana are required to carry a passport that is valid for six months beyond the intended length of stay and to have a minimum of 3 blank visa pages.
If you are taking part and don't hold a South African passport then please be aware you will need to purchase visas which can be obtained at the port of entry.
Visas
For Zimbabwe you will require double entry visa fees as we will enter and leave the country on two occasions.
The Zambian visa fees are a little more expensive and Americans will have to pay US$135 for their visa. The price for a single, multiple or transit visa are all the same so it is better to just get the multiple entry visa. British passport holders pay £75 per single entry/transit visa.

Of course we are happy to help you as much as we can to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible but please note that ultimately the responsibility lies with the participant to ensure that their passport and visas are valid for the countries being visited.

“The sad reality is that there are 50 deaths every day in South Africa as a result of violent crime. Many people feel angry and threatened, yet feel apathetic and hopeless due to the enormity of the problem.” Stan Lorge, Computershare SA CEO
Computershare SA established the Change a Life Mike Thomson Trust to sponsor anti-crime and crime victim support initiatives following the brutal murder of Senior Manager Mike Thomson at his Johannesburg home on 27th September 2007.
The Mike Thomson Trust commemorates Mike’s remarkable community spirit and commitment to children by funding grassroots projects aimed at combating crime, as well as providing support to victims of crime, with a special focus on children. Computershare provides seed capital to the Trust and coordinates fundraising activities, such as the Change a Life Cycle, in order to generate additional funds.
The Trust is dedicated to a peaceful future for all South Africans. It supports effective, grassroots programmes that are judged to be efficacious in dealing with the causes and symptoms of crime.
Victims of crime can apply to the Mike Thomson Trust to receive counselling as well as financial support, if they have no means. The Trust also supports programmes aimed at improving the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children whose hopeless circumstances mean that many are drawn to crime.

The Computershare Bus
The Computershare Bus will allow us to take all the primary school children to school in one trip instead of having to make three journeys. It will save on petrol and will get the children to school on time, which is not the case now.
There is a stigma in being an orphan in Cambodia and often they are called names at school. The sheer WOW factor of the bus will certainly raise their status among their school friends!
My plan, when I return in late November is to find a date where we can take all of us to the beach at Sihanoukville, so we can "christen" our wonderful purple Computershare Bus.
I already have the children working on a pet name for the bus and will get back to you with a short list for you to choose!
Many heartfelt thanks to our new friends at Computershare from all of us here at Sunrise.
Love and light

In Southern Chad, the traditional farming practice of ‘slash and burn’ results in the complete removal of trees from the landscape. The result is complete degradation and desertification of farming land, leaving it virtually useless for cultivation.
World Vision, with support from Computershare, has implemented a farming technique called ‘farmer-managed natural regeneration’ (FMNR), which improves soil stability as well as providing benefits to livestock and the health of the people in the region.
FMNR encourages farmers to keep the trees on their farms. Pruning the trees instead of removing them provides significant advantages for the soil, which in return benefits the farmer’s output.
In 2007 the benefits of the Change-a-Life project have contributed to significant improvements in how farmers utilize the land.
TRAINING
· 76 Community Leaders were trained in the FMNR farming technique.
· They now train the farmers in their communities to use this technique.
COMMITTEES
· Natural resource management committees were set up in 12 communities to promote the implementation of FMNR farming techniques across the broader communities.
FARMERS
· 319 Farmers in 8 communities now use the FMNR method
Malantin Andre - a farmer who adopted the FMNR method-“Thanks to the new technique… our life has changed. The food production has doubled and many people have also adopted this farming technique”
When you participate in an event like the Computershare Change a Life cycling challenge, the reasons are personal and in my mind always mixed. My own reasons were to seek adventure, personal challenge, to return to my beloved S.E. Asia and bring attention and resources to needy people.
Craig cycling along the roads of Laos
What has been achieved practically with the 'Change a Life' charity challenge is that money, cold hard cash, was generated, which can be turned into sustainable resource; such as access, roads, clean water and education for a community, a village , a town and a country that by anybody's standards has been largely forgotten by the global community.
While, there can never be enough, I have witnessed that money can always be generated for good causes. Once we part with our hard-earned money, we trust government and non-government organisations to work with local communities in the best possible way to make sure that the resource is used in the best possible way.
Kelly, Nicola and Craig on their way to the village
But the 'Change a Life' project did much more than this. Computershare is a large (by any corporate standards) global organisation. And now suffers from the same afflictions of similar organisations - they must by nature become less personable.
What Change a Life brought was humanity. Twenty-three individuals linked by Computershare, and in groups which were culturally different and in some cases where English was not necessarily the first language, relied on each other as much as themselves, for physical, mental and practical support.
The team, for all I know, all came from different economic backgrounds but as an assumption, from comfortable westernised backgrounds. The team landed in an environment as unfamiliar to most as landing on Mars. It is so much easier and comfortable to witness what we witnessed from a TV screen - you can always turn a TV off.
Craig enjoys some home-brew Lao Lao at the village
The riding was hard - hot and hilly conditions and a crazy time zone change for many led to a few early (temporary) casualties - I think we were all in a bit of shock after the first day, but we settled down and got on with the work at hand.
As we warmed to our bikes, we warmed to each other and yes, the excited faces of children, including those of the hard-core 'high-five' kids brigades and the curious waves and smiles of elders, made us realise that this indeed was not Mars and not even a dream.
We struggled on and at each stop there was a new adventure; a temple, a school, a festival - something which took your mind off any discomfort you had willingly put yourself through - each day was one long photo opportunity.
Of course, it was not always hard work and the universal language of liquid refreshment allowed us to reflect at the end of each day on what was achieved, physically - the laughs we heard and the scenes we saw and the first question after ordering the first beer was - where can I get a massage!
I witnessed individuals in the group overcome what they thought were their own physical and mental limitations - the power of perseverance was realised.
Beautiful Lao sunset
By the end of the trip, what the Change a Life challenge had created was its own community, nay a family. The Global network which Computershare prides itself on was a reality. Lifelong friendships were made and a unique bond formed.
But more importantly for me was that we were educated and that is as important as the money raised, because we can educate our friends, colleagues and family and they too can spread the word and find ways to make a difference.
Ultimately I learned that no matter what your circumstance are, a smile can put light on any plight. I also learned that I complain too much about little things that really don't matter and that it doesn't take much to change a life or make a difference.
Ethiopia is barely 15% the land mass of Australia, yet it has a population of 65 million people. Of these, 900,000 are blind, and an additional 3-4 million people have impaired vision.
A major contributing factor is the eye disease ‘trachoma’, caused by infestations carried by flies, as well as a lack of clean water for face washing.
In 2007 we have seen very encouraging results from the Change-a-life project, including
SURGERY
ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
HEALTH EDUCATION
Thanks to the Mobile Eye Clinic, people such as Balcha and his wife can return to work on their farms, and women like Desu can return to work, enabling them to provide for their families.
With a great deal of excitement we are pleased to be able to report that the land has now been cleared and a fence erected around the land on which Sunrise 3 Children’s Village will be built.
We look forward to seeing the commencement of the building program in the next couple of months. The bus that has been purchased, mentioned in the last newsletter, is being used daily to take the children to and from school and has been a great success story. As well as requiring only one round trip daily to take the children to and from school the striking Computershare colour and the overall appearance of the bus, which has been much admired, has made the children travelling in the bus feel very special.
Frank Reimann
Driven by a desire to make this world a better place I left our family business in Germany and pursued graduate studies in Management (MBA Economic Development) and Cross Cultural Leadership (MA Intercultural Studies) about 12 years ago. Upon graduation I was Country Director in Cambodia and Cameroon with another international Development agency before joining CARE Australia as Country Director for Laos in March 2006.
My job allows me to use all my creativity, emotional intelligence, management skills and love for people, which facilitates lasting change so that poverty is overcome and people live in dignity and security.
CARE International in Laos is focusing on Integrated Rural Development, Disaster Preparedness and Reproductive Health. We have adapted a geographical focus with programs in Sayaburi, Sekong and Phonsaly Province plus Vientiane Capital and Province.
I find it most rewarding when I can see how individuals and communities we work with have been empowered to enjoy an improved quality of life.
Noi, a young woman from a rural area of Laos comes to mind. Driven by the socio-economic dimensions of living in rural Laos she came to Vientiane to find work to support her family. Not having finished school and without marketable skills Noi quickly ended up as a low paid waitress who offered her company to male customers for exchange of an 'extra tip'. Through CARE’s work Noi learned about the risks of unprotected sex and participated in training as a hairdresser which allowed her to make a choice and earn a living in security and dignity.
Phongsaly Province is characterised by steep hills and mountains, with very little flat land. This means that the communities in the area cultivate their fields on slopes with a gradient that is often 50-60%. The steep land limits the quantity and quality of the crops, which fail to provide adequate food for daily needs. Rice production falls well short of requirements, for example almost half of the population in Khua and Samphan lack rice for 3 months of the year, and an alarmingly high number of people lack rice for 6 months of the year (Samphan 24%; Khua 16%). This must be addressed along with other issues outlined below.
Health issues are pressing and include high rates of:• diarrhoea; linked to a lack of water supply systems and poor sanitation and hygiene• coughs, flu and pneumonia; especially amongst children• goitre and amenia, linked to limited knowledge of good nutritional practices and poor diets• women’s reproductive health related complaints• malaria
With Computershare’s support, CARE will build on planning and food security initiatives already underway in the area. This means that our work with Computershare will be based on specific needs already identified by the villagers themselves. It will provide tangible and practical benefits for the villagers, and consolidate and enhance the overall impact on health and livelihoods in 5 target villages.
The project will assist the communities in having consistent and closer clean water supply, improved basic health services, and opportunities for increased income through access to markets.
Water supply construction will have immediate benefits:> Water supply is clean and consistent> Reduced time required by women and children to collect daily household water
Other activities will have longer-term benefits:> Market access will depend on products identified and markets sourced. It is hoped that income will be earned from these activities within 18 months of project implementation.
> Training and in-the-field support to build skills, confidence and understanding of people in the community to address development issues. For example, training of health workers will mean there are people with a better understanding of health issues available in the village itself.
> Water User Groups (WUG) will be established to manage and maintain the water supply units. This system has been found to be a sustainable way of ensuring supply of water to the village in other areas CARE has worked. The WUG's also create a sense of ownership and responsibility for the water supply unit amongst the community.
> The project will work with income generation groups that will provide them with skills in negotiating prices with traders, to help identify new or emerging markets, and develop quality of produce/products for increased market value. The skills, knowledge and relationships developed as part of this activity will continue beyond the life of the project.
Phongsaly Health and Livelihood Project
Focus Village: Yang Neua, Samphan District, Phongsaly Province
The Phongsaly Health and Livelihood project funded by Computershare has begun to train village health workers to improve their skills in general diagnosis and treatment of health problems. Through the project, CARE has also been able to purchase medicine kits with a range of drugs and supplies to treat common local ailments.
As part of this project, CARE is also training local women in midwife roles to help other women give birth. These women currently use just their experience, lacking any proper equipment or training. To address this, the project will identify and train suitable villagers in the management of the village medicine supply.
Another area of concern that the project will address is the lack of a clean water supply, which is a clear health problem for the village. Working with the villagers CARE will construct a clean water system with taps distributed across the village, for easy access for all. The villagers carry out the construction work themselves and provide building materials including sand, stones, gravel and timber. Computershare’s support will enable the provision of construction steel, cement and technical expertise to carry out the work.
With thanks to Computershare, the Phongsaly Health and Livelihood Project is not only making a significant difference to the people living in Yang Neua, but also to the lives of many other vulnerable people living in the Phongsaly Province of Laos.
Pictures:
Phongsaly Ban Yang Neua 2:
Hygiene is a problem in the remote villages. The project will provide a clean water system with water taps in the village. This will provide the means to improve hygiene. In addition the project will provide training and follow-up actions to ensure these initiatives are maintained

Mr Phuntavary, Health Officer
Yang Neua Village, Samphan District, Phongsaly Province
none
The people of Yang Neau village, one of the communities supported by Computershare within the Phongsaly Health and Livelihoods Project in Laos, are of Khmu ethnicity. Nine months ago their village was relocated, having originally being a further two and half hours walk away from its new position. The closer proximity makes it far more accessible for residents and visitors alike.
The village receives support from CARE in the growth of non-timber forest products such as nangnio, cardamom and gangalal. In January the 43 families living in the village received funds from Computershare to install a water supply from the mountains, to provide cleaner and consistent access to water. The village chief considered the water supply a top priority for the village, so together they planned where the 4 taps would be located around the village to ensure equally convenient access for everyone.
Mr Phuntavary, the new village health worker (pictured below), does not receive any income for his role, but says he took on the position because he wants to help his community. He sees real benefits in being the village health worker, with people coming to see him even though they are not 100% sure that he can always cure them.
More women come to Mr Phuntavary for health assistance, particularly for their children, and diarrhoea is currently a real issue amongst children in the village. His future goal for the role is to gather “more knowledge on how to treat people, especially for malaria”, as the incidence of malaria in the village during the rainy season is particularly high.
With the support of Computershare, CARE will continue to work with people like Mr Phuntavary in the communities that are directly benefiting from the Change a Life Program support.

Essential Notification Information
Essential Information/DocumentsYou will find below all the essential information and documents you need to make notifications. You will also find a number of time saving methods to help you make notifications more efficiently.
If you have an enquiry that is not answered here please contact Customer Services using the numbers below.
Why Notify your gas work?
If you are undertaking gas installation or replacement work in residential properties you need to notify CORGI about this work as part of your Rules of Registration. Gas Work Notification was introduced in April 2005 as part of our on-going commitment to raise gas safety standards and reduce incidents. By notifying your work to us you are declaring that an installation has been carried out by a CORGI Registered Installer. This declaration is sent to your customers as a Declaration of Gas Safety Certificate which reassures your customers that they have used a CORGI Registered Installer. This helps marginalise illegal gas work as only registered installers can issue these certificates.
What Information do I need to provide?CORGI has put together a checklist which outlines the information you need to provide to CORGI when making a notification click here.
What is Notifiable under Gas Scheme?Under Gas Work Notification Registered Installers are required to notify CORGI when they install or exchange a gas appliance of any type or input rating in a residential dwelling. For the definition of a residential dwelling click here.
What is Notifiable under CORGI’s Competent Person Schemes? If you are registered with CORGI for a Competent Person Scheme you have the ability to self certify the work you undertake complies with the Building Regulations and notify that work to CORGI. To find out what is notifiable under each of CORGI’s Competent Person Schemes click here.
Data ProtectionSince the announcement of Work Notification a number of questions have been raised regarding how the information collected by CORGI will be used and whether or not it will comply with the Data Protection Act (DPA). To help answer these questions, CORGI has prepared a guide to the DPA. Click here.
7 Digit CORGI Short CodesTo save installers time and to make Notification as simple as possible CORGI has created short codes for every work activity/appliance. Any installer making Notifications via Multiple Notifications or Bulk upload MUST use short codes. The list of short codes is presented in an excel spreadsheet format where you can carry out a search via 'Find' to find a specific appliance/work activity click here.
Gas Council Numbers (Gas Notifications Only)Instead of selecting the details of the appliance installed from a series of drop down lists, you have the ability to enter the Gas Council Number of the appliance. By: Cassie DuncanMelbourne Participants: Jill Finch, Jennifer Nelson, Haran Nagendran, Cassie DuncanThe four participants from the Melbourne office, decided that a wine tasting evening would be a perfect way to welcome in the festive season and raise money for the Laos Cycling Challenge.
Wine bottle with Change a Life label
After making the decision to host a wine tasting evening, a local wine retailer was approached, Get Wines Direct, and having hosted numerous fundraising events previously they were more than happy to host a wine tasting evening at Computershare.
Because the selected wines were cleanskins, it was decided that labels would be printed to promote Change a Life. A local artist, Rob Gale, donated artwork for our in-house designer to use and as a team we came up with the tag line, ‘Change a Life and Celebrate’. In the weeks leading up to the event there was a lot to do; we labeled nearly 1,000 bottles, which was quite a task!
Employees enjoy the wine tasting
With all the preparations in order the night went off without a hitch. Just after 5pm, people started filling the room. There were about 80 people in attendance throughout the evening, all coming together in support of a great cause while also enjoying a friendly catch-up outside of work hours.
Craig Heaven, from Sales and Marketing walked away a happy customer, “The Change a Life wine tasting evening made for quite an enjoyable post work event. Some great nibbles, dry whites and even dryer jokes from Matt Willis! A great way to end a day at Yarra Falls.”
The event raised AU$2,700 (ZAR$15,241, US$2,091, €1,620, CAD$2,467, £1,068), and was held at a perfect time for people to stock up for the festive season!
Steph and Alison from HR enjoy the evening
Dustin Teasdale, a fundraiser and participant claims, “it is all BBQ’s and beach in Sydney” with most of his fundraising money coming from BBQ’s on the balcony with beers and wine to wash down the charcoal!Ben Wolrige from Perth utilised his contacts through the family business to generate most of his funds, with long-term customers and suppliers happy to help when they heard about the cause.
For those of you who have never been to Australia and are unaccustomed to their unique culture then here's a little secret, they are crazy about sport, namely Australian rules football, or Aussie rules! This is a game unique to Australia that originated in Melbourne. The game is played between two teams of 18 players on cricket ovals, the aim being to kick an oval-shaped ball through goal posts to score points. Spectacular high marks or "speccies", tackles and fast fluid play make this game a fantastic spectators sport.
When ten tickets to the grand final became available, it seemed only appropriate to auction them off for Change a Life. The winning bidders had the privilege of seeing the great game live, knowing that a whopping AU$4,283 went direct to a fantastic cause.
Further to this, ten U2 concert tickets were kindly donated and auctioned off for AU$2,951. Once again proving that people will pay almost anything to see live music or sport, especially when they know the money is going to help those people who truly need it.
These two initiatives raised a combined total of over AU$7,000 for the cause, proving that it doesn't take much to make a huge difference.
Please email changealife@computershare.com.au if you have any ideas for further fundraising initiatives.
Toronto golf day
Forty plus clients were in attendance at the golf tournament this year in Toronto. Golfers arrived close to noon for a BBQ lunch and then off to play a scramble format golf game. In lieu of the usual prizes for the various contests, winners were provided with a certificate noting that Computershare would donate to the Change a Life initiative on their behalf.
Staff also held a "Beat the Pro" contest where participants were asked to pay $10 that went directly to Change a Life. Impressively, $460 was collected through ticket sales alone. Between the 'Beat the Pro' and various other contests, donations totalled $1460CAD. Following the golf tournament there were drinks and a casual BBQ dinner of steak and salmon. Feedback from clients regarding the day was very positive.
In an effort to develop a unique fundraising vehicle, Computershare employees based in North America created and produced a cookbook, Computershare Cooks for CARE. Featuring over 400 tried-and-true recipes, the cookbook contains everything from soup to nuts.
With many of the recipes being old family favourites, passed down for generations, the book has taken on an ethnic and international flair. Just a small sampling of these recipes include: African Rice Pilaf, Kung Pao Chicken, Pierogi, Pollo Guisado (Stewed Chicken with Potatoes) and Keftedes (Greek Fried Meatballs.)
Once the spiral-bound cookbooks were printed and delivered, sales efforts took off feverishly at all United States and Canadian offices. Employees were anxious to buy extra copies of the book for their friends and family members.
The committee producing the cookbook felt that, not only was this a fun project to develop, but it meshed well with the principles behind the Computershare Change a Life initiative. As Chris Morris wrote in the cookbook introduction, "Food has the power to unite people, sustain communities and demonstrate our care for others less fortunate." Profits from the sale of the cookbooks are being donated directly to Change a Life. To date, just under US$10,000 has been raised from the sale of the cookbook.

I had a ‘good slide’ into the New Year, as we say here in Germany, because my fundraising target for the Change a Life Laos Cycling Challenge was met ahead of schedule. Helped by colleagues in the Pepper Munich office, I ran three bazaars, two Glühwein (hot mulled wine) evenings and one raffle to generate funds and holiday cheer!
When I signed up for this event, I recognised a significant challenge; an extreme physical test and an ambitious fundraising goal on top of the demands of my position here as Manager of Creative Services.
Florian, Katrin & Steffen
Luckily, Florian Schuetz, Managing Director at Computershare and Steffen Herfurth, Managing Director at Pepper supported me from the start. One morning they greeted every employee with a smile, a flyer and an explanation of my Laos ride. They even gave me a great events team – headed by the indispensable Sandra Pfeiffer – to help me raise funds.
In November, both Managers donated furniture and office supplies leftover from Pepper’s move the previous year. We hauled items up from the basement, added several impressive oil paintings donated by Florian’s wife and my father, and invited Pepper staff to shop at our bazaar on three separate afternoons - we were rewarded well!
Constance, Andrea, Monika, Valerie
In early December as the Munich Christmas markets opened, we hosted our own Glühwein evening in our office courtyard. In keeping with my motto, ‘Make it fun and people will gladly support a good cause’, we raised more and had a fabulous time.
Next, a raffle at Pepper’s company Christmas party (initiated by Steffen) brought us to our goal. With iPods, a digital camera and gift certificates to win, Pepper partygoers bought plenty of tickets. And finally, generous donations from the Computershare party allowed me to well exceed my fundraising target of €3,000 (A$5,00, US$3,700, R28,000, £2,000, CAD$4,500) .
Employees enjoy the evening
As the departure date draws near, I’m asked daily by interested coworkers, ‘How’s your training going, Andrea?’ In the evening at the fitness club or on my new trainer at home when I worry if I’ll be ready, I reassure myself with the fact that I managed to overcome the first challenge, fundraising, so anything is possible!
By: Ursula Du Plooy
When the Laos Cycle Challenge first came up, I saw it as an opportunity to make a difference; to use one of my great passions, cycling, to make a personal contribution to Computershare's Change a Life initiative. It was a chance to join hands with colleagues from across the world and, as one team, make a significant financial contribution to a good cause. I was really pleased, but not surprised, when five other South Africans volunteered. Computershare people here are always ready to rise to a challenge, particularly when their efforts will benefit others.
Team photo of participants and fundraisers
I was thrilled that three of our volunteers, myself included, were chosen but not a little daunted by the task of having to raise R112,000 (A$20K, US$14,800, €12,000, CAD$18,500, £8,000). Stan Lorge, our CEO, organised fundraising activities like a military campaign. He drafted in the leadership team to approach their suppliers most of whom were not slow to come to the party. Within a few days we had pledges, both cash and in-kind, for more than half the amount, and a little friendly persuasion helped to keep the contributions flowing.
Internally, we settled on a "month of casual" for November. In return for a R50 (A$9) contribution, staff could come to work dressed casually for the entire month, with the usual proviso that client-facing staff dressed appropriately. Within the business, departments organised their own activities, one of which was a weekly raffle for a Friday afternoon off. By popular demand, December also became a casual month and within a short time we had reached our target.
Team South Africa in training
The addition of our fourth participant, Allan Botes, saw another flurry of fund raising activity. Again our suppliers and staff came to the party and Stan donated a prize of four days at Sun City for a raffle, entries for which are still coming in.
What at first glance seemed to be an almost insurmountable task, raising such a large amount of money, with some ingenuity and hard work, turned out to be, if not a walk in the park, then a cycle through it!
Stuart Todd sets off early
Stuart Todd, a keen cyclist and UK participant in the Laos Cycling Challenge, paints a colourful picture of his ultimate endurance fundraiser:
By Stuart ToddI’ve been a keen cyclist for most of my life, so when I was chosen for the Change a Life Laos Cycling Challenge, I thought it would be fitting to do something suitably “bikey” for my first fundraising effort. Thinking about destinations that would capture people’s imaginations, and with one eye on the need to tie in some Christmas shopping, it didn’t take long for the idea of a 120-mile (193km) Bristol to London bike ride to take form; and so the date was set: Friday 17th November, leaving the Bristol office at 5:30am with a planned maximum completion time of ten hours.
I awoke at 4am to a complete deluge - truly torrential rain - and was more tempted by the prospect of returning to bed than by my unappetising breakfast of pasta and an energy drink. Yet I was spurred on by the challenge of it all, and by my friends and colleagues’ fantastic sponsorship, so bit the bullet and set off as planned. I was soaked within minutes of leaving my front door, although that was the least of my worries, and further problems soon ensued - from a problematic bike pump and flooding roads, to adverse wind conditions and three wretched punctures! Nevertheless, I managed to retain my sense of humour through it all (more or less), aided by text messages from friends back home. I was delighted to learn that one guy in the office had started sponsoring me by the puncture! Inevitably, my poor phone later succumbed to the weather and drowned.
Bike repairs and time spent waiting on replacement parts from my trusty support car (go Dad!) cost me three frustrating hours of delays, and would later cost me my chance of a daylight finish, but I arrived into London – part cycling, part surfing and later than planned – at 5:15pm, nearly twelve hours after leaving Bristol. I was determined to finish in the face of adversity, and the ride raised over £1,500 (US$2,900, A$3,730, CAD$3,420, €2,240, ZAR21,161), so a huge thanks to everyone who sponsored me.
Maybe it’s the rain, but the whole thing seems strangely surreal and blurry, and when I think back, I just get an unusual (but satisfying) sensation of wet, cold and punctured! But already I’m surprised to find myself planning “next time”…
By: Kelly Hartman
The members of TEAM USA are Kelly Hartman from Edison NJ, Lida Letowt, Vanessa Asasouk, and Craig Gambrill from Shelton, CT. We have raised over US$10,000 (£5,105, A$12,920, CAD$11,800, €7,750, ZAR72,935) for the Global Cycling Challenge so far, and with the help of an anonymous matching donor, our total is over US$20,000.
We have spread the word to our colleagues and friends about the purpose of our trip and have received a terrific response from everyone.
Casual days were organised in various sites across the United States including New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Chicago where associates were permitted to wear jeans and sneakers if a donation was made.
In local sites, raffles were held with prizes including jewellery, DVDs, books, gift certificates, sporting event tickets, and a beautiful handmade quilt. Because the items were donated, all of the proceeds went directly to the cause.
In Shelton, a Cocktail party was held which included appetisers, drinks, and music for a donation on entry. It was at this event where all four members of TEAM USA were together for the first time.
General donations were made on our website http://my.care.org/care/fundraising/craig.gambril-453003 and many donations were given to us in person to support the cause.
One team member, Craig, has pledged to get tattoos (CARE, Change a Life, and Computershare) for every US$10,000 the team raises (not counting the matching donor amount) so hopefully we will get to view one of those tattoos while we are in Laos!
Our colleagues across the country have supported our efforts and risen to the fundraising challenge with us. Special thanks to the people who offered their assistance in so many ways. We look forward to sharing our stories and pictures when we return.
Fundraising is not only a great way of making money for a charitable cause but it is also a fantastic way of raising awareness about the issues that matter. Change a Life is all about participation, and with increased participation comes the increased potential to direct funds to where they are needed most.
As a Computershare employee, regular payroll donations are the most effective way of ensuring a steady flow of funds to Change a Life. Volunteering a contribution is easy to set up and in most cases is tax deductible, and all contributions are matched by Computershare. Click on I want to donate to find out how to set up your one-off or monthly donation. Alternatively, if you would like to host an event in aid of Change a Life, your efforts will be fully supported by Computershare.
Events such as quiz nights, cake stalls, jewellery stalls, book sales, fun runs and auctions are always an effective way of generating funds, and a great way of uniting people in support of the cause.
If you or anyone you know is interested in hosting an event on behalf of Change a Life then please follow these simple steps:

Monday 5th May 2008 saw eight members of Computershare Bristol’s Plans team run and complete the Bristol 10K race to raise money for the Sunrise Children’s Village.
The sunny and warm weather presented ideal conditions for the hundreds of spectators who came to watch the race, and the Computershare team all completed the entire 10 kilometres, spurred on by the worthy cause for which they were running.
So far, the team have raised £212.32 for Change a Life, and there is still plenty of time for more people to donate.
Ali Perry of Computershare Plans was one of the team who completed the race:
“We would like to thank everybody for taking the time to sponsor us. Thanks to their generosity, we are still accumulating sponsorship money for The Sunrise Children’s Village.”

Cambodia and its people share a sad and tortured past. Thirty years of war, foreign occupation, genocide and civil war have left many children orphaned and in danger of being trafficked as prostitutes, being forced into illegal child labour and lives on the streets involving crime and drugs resulting in early death.
Geraldine Cox visited Cambodia in 1993 with two friends and they were struck by the helplessness and tragedy of these ‘lost’ children, so in response they set up the Australia Cambodia Foundation, that same year. It was incorporated in South Australia in 2004.
Small regular monthly donations were solicited by Geraldine and a circle of friends, from individuals, to feed one child. This was how it all started...
Members of the Sunrise Sewing School
From humble beginnings, Geraldine has been able to secure enough funding over the years to operate two orphanages in Cambodia and now with the support of the Computershare Change a Life initiative, she is setting up a third.
The name, Sunrise Children’s Villages, was determined by the children in 2000 as they felt it better represented their new life and conjured up visions of a new dawn and a fresh beginning.
Children come to Sunrise Children Villages in a myriad of ways: parents or other family members have been killed or maimed by land-mines or died of hunger or disease. When these children are rendered homeless, the villagers sometimes make every effort to care for them, but more often than not, they are taken into homes and used as slave-labour in return for food and a place to sleep until their plight is brought to the attention of Sunrise.
To comply with Cambodian Government regulations, Sunrise investigates claims of abuse or neglect and once the village leaders have produced background details on the children and given official notice that they wish the children to be cared for by Sunrise, these papers are lodged with the Ministry of Social Affairs, and then Sunrise is permitted to take the children from the village and become their "guardians" until they are 18 years old.
In each case the staff at Sunrise goes to the villages to assess the situation on the ground to ensure that the need is real. If it is not too traumatic for the children, photos of the living conditions are taken to compare later with life at Sunrise.
Music and Dancing School
The Change a Life initiative has pledged A$500,000 to Geraldine and the Australia Cambodia Foundation to construct a new Sunrise Children’s Village on five hectares of land in Sihanoukville, a port city in south west Cambodia. The land is situated about 20 kilometres out of town on the fringe of the Ream National Park and close to the recently re-opened Sihanoukville Airport.
The village will comprise twelve family houses for ten to fourteen children each, grouped around a village green. There will be a communal kitchen/dining room and classrooms for English, sewing and computer studies. A dance school and theatre, medical clinic, staff offices and accommodation will also be constructed. A soccer pitch and playground are also planned. At Sunrise, the focus is on offering a full and complete life for each child, not just providing food and shelter. One example of achieving this is by including a ‘parents’ room in each family house, which will be occupied by a Cambodian House Mother who will be employed to live in the house to create a true sense of family for each child.
Below is a list of some of the things Sunrise provides for their children:
This is an extremely exciting partnership between Computershare and the Australia Cambodia Foundation, a partnership which will enable more children to be granted the certainty of a secure future, away from the hardship of poverty.

Child who will benefit
In 1984 famine crippled Chad, which came as a brutal blow to a country which had just come out of two decades of political and social unrest. Today, in 2007, 80% of Chad’s population remains reliant upon the land for subsistence farming and livestock-raising. Because of this, one of the most pressing issues for Chad (a Saharan/sub-Saharan country) is the rate of desertification due to deforestation, inappropriate farming techniques and crop selection.
Through the implementation of a farmer managed natural regeneration (FMNR) project, World Vision, through the support of the Computershare Change a Life Foundation, can ensure that natural diversity is reinstated, giving alternative sources of food and income, significantly reducing the impact of drought and famine. It will also protect communities and future generations from enduring similar hardship to that faced in 1984 and during subsequent hunger periods.
Community member
FMNR is an extraordinarily cost-effective, rapid and sustainable form of re-vegetation. It re-establishes the most appropriate trees for a territory and biodiversity that could not be achieved except through more costly plantation reforestation.FMNR is a method of agro-forestry in which naturally occurring re-growth (shoots) from the stumps of felled trees are managed by the local farmers. FMNR involves the selection and pruning of shoot re-growth from existing tree stumps. This pruning results in rapid growth, environmental restoration and the production of an economic resource for home consumption and for sale.
FMNR was pioneered in Southern Niger under more extreme conditions than those found in the target area of Chad. In a twenty-year period, FMNR spread from just 12 hectares to over two million, transforming a once barren, degraded landscape into more productive open parkland.
Barren land to be regenerated
The entire population in twelve World Vision Chad operational areas, totaling 349,000 people, will benefit from this initiative. This is because over 95% of the people in this region are entirely dependant on utilisation of natural resources for their livelihood. Women and children will particularly benefit as they will need to spend less time walking in search of firewood for cooking, which means less exhaustion and more time spent on other home duties and at school. This will ultimately result in better nutrition and greater opportunities as income levels rise. In addition, many regenerated species provide edible leaves and fruits, for human and animal consumption during the long dry season. The wood from trees also allows farmers to build more secure structures for storage and to sell.
Trees and wood products for sale
Once communities have been sensitised to the benefits of FMNR, have agreed to the by-laws on the management of trees on their own land, which are endorsed by the Department of Forestry and once they are benefiting financially, FMNR will become a routine farming practice which does not need external promotion or resources. Trees will begin generating income within two years.
A high level of sustainability is expected due to:
Map of Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the least developed countries in the world, with the resources of Ethiopia being primarily agricultural and of a subsistence nature. Of Ethiopia’s population of 65 million, 900,000 people are blind and 80% of these cases could have been prevented. An additional 3-4 million people currently have impaired vision and unless quality eye care is made available, they too are at risk of going prematurely blind.
In Ethiopia, cataract and trachoma constitute 70% of all cases of blindness with the leading causes of childhood blindness being Vitamin A deficiencies, measles, accidents, infections, trachoma and harmful traditional medicines.
A young woman receives follow-up, after trachoma surgery
The Ethiopian government adopted a new national health policy in 1993, prioritising preventative healthcare, however, due to the poor internal infrastructure primary health services only cover half of the population.
In rural Ethiopia, just one ophthalmologist and 73 ophthalmic nurses serve 6 million people. Because of this, World Vision is working closely with government health departments, schools and communities in a number of different regions of Southern Ethiopia to improve access to basic health care. World Vision Australia’s trachoma prevention and control programs across Ethiopia touch a total population of over 300,000 people, which provides a great example of the reach of such projects.
A patient having an eye exam
In order to increase service coverage and reduce the prevalence of blinding trachoma, World Vision has been managing a mobile eye care clinic. The clinic program commenced in early 2005 and during this time clinic staff have screened thousands of people for trachoma and have provided opportunities for local health workers to learn about eye care, as well as providing training to health workers. In addition, the clinic provides basic examination services including assessment of refractory errors. Used eyeglasses are collected from donors inside and outside the country and are provided, free of charge, to people needing them. The clinic team also provides basic health education to control the spread of preventable eye disease amongst people in the visited communities.
The clinic travels in a four wheel drive, and is staffed by a driver, an ophthalmic nurse and volunteer ophthalmologists. The vehicle transports the staff and materials, while surgery, treatment and training are undertaken inside local health posts or tents, depending on the facilities available in the area being serviced.
Child being screened
This initiative is releasing people from immense pain and curtailing the rapid onset of irreversible blindness. Treatment is now reaching remote areas that would not otherwise be accessed.
Due to the clinic's focus on education, there is a strong element of sustainability with communities learning how to reduce the prevalence of blinding trachoma.

Map of Laos - northern target region highlighted in orange
Laos is in Southeast Asia and is bordered by Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Myanmar (Burma). It has a population of approximately 5 million, with ethnic minorities making up around 80% of the poorest regions. The life expectancy in Laos is fifty-three years of age and the under five mortality rate is 105 per 1000 live births (UN Human Development Program, 2002).
CARE resumed direct program operations in Laos in 1989 following an earlier 1954-57 emergency program. CARE aims to provide the means for sustainable self-help programs whereby people help themselves through community based projects.
Remote village, Laos – ©2005 Jonathan Drake
This project will work with some of the poorest communities in Laos, in remote areas within Phongsaly province in the north of the country. Ninety-four percent of the villages in this province rank amongst the poorest in the country with the two target districts being Khua and Samphan.
CARE is currently working in the project regions of Khua and Sampham to reduce food insecurity by aiding in the construction of infrastructure including drainage channels and irrigation to reduce susceptibility to natural disasters such as floods and drought. Through this work CARE has identified the immediate needs of the villagers in the region, and through the support of Computershare and its employees CARE will now be able to address these issues.
Phongsaly Province is characterised primarily by steep hills and mountains, with limited access to roads or transport; and most villages can only be reached by walking or using river transport. This in turn affects people’s access to health services, safe water supply and markets. Almost 50% of villages have identified water supply as one of their key problems. Sanitation in villages is also an area of concern with very few people using latrines. Rates of diarrhoea, flu, malaria and women’s reproductive health related complaints are high and local village health workers have received limited training and do not have stores of basic medical supplies to assist with minor ailments.
Educating villagers, Laos – ©2005 Jonathan Drake
The fundamental goal of this project is to improve the health and livelihood of communities living in the Khua and Sampham regions. The project will achieve its goal by implementing activities in three main areas
Water supply, sanitation and/or irrigation systems will be installed in five villages. This will help to reduce water borne diseases, and particularly improve the lives of women and children who have the daily responsibility of collecting water from streams and rivers. CARE will also conduct sanitation and hygiene training for parents and children, educating them on the importance of hand washing, boiling water, cleaning food and utensils before use, and garbage collection and disposal.
Villages are very remote, and usually people must walk for many hours to the nearest health centre. Often the combined cost of transport and/or treatment means that people tend not to seek medical advice. To help counter this trend, village health workers will be provided with a basic store of medicines and equipment and will be trained to manage and administer these supplies. The small amount charged for administering the medicine will help replenish stores so that the program can be sustained. In addition, a de-worming campaign will also be conducted, which will be aimed at children and will increase the impact of nutritional awareness campaigns that CARE is currently conducting.

The project will work with communities and traders to identify locally available products that have the potential to generate income i.e. honey. The project will incorporate an educational element to ensure the protection of natural resources. Communities will receive training on processing and marketing their produce to improve their ability to negotiate deals with traders. Some households will be selected and provided with basic equipment to process raw materials into end-products, enabling them to achieve higher rates of return on trade. Locally available materials will be used where possible to improve the potential for other households to replicate the activities.
CARE Australia is working in Phongsaly Province, providing clean drinking water, sanitation, and irrigation to more than 50,000 people in 31 villages. The Computershare Change a Life Foundation directly supports five of these villages.

The support received from Computershare has created new hope for less privileged youth
Presentation of Computers donated by Computershare
In 2001 a decision was made for Computershare to support a small project that provides funding and materials to assist in the education of underprivileged children primarily based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In addition to financial support, Computershare has donated a number of second-hand computers. The Come-Share project continues to go from strength to strength and so it is with great enthusiasm and excitement that it is welcomed into the Change a Life family.
The project, which is almost entirely funded by Computershare, has an enviable record of integrity with close to 100% of funds going directly to beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries at the Paynter home
Come-Share is a program that encourages and assists genuinely disadvantaged people to gain a foothold in life and establish themselves primarily in economic terms, through education and vocational training. For someone to be sponsored through Come-Share there must be a case of genuine need, where one’s normal/extended family circumstances are bleak, and such that the pursuit of education would be in jeopardy. At Come-Share there is an inherent belief that because the founders came from similar backgrounds to the recipients, they are more understanding of their needs and thus make appropriate decisions concerning who should receive funding. In addition, this means that the Come-Share project not only offers financial assistance but the founders offer guidance and emotional support to children who may never have had it.
Primarily, Come-Share seeks to fund children from year ten (O level) onwards, rather than at a nursery level. This is because education up until year ten is free, so many children, although they come from poor backgrounds, can complete year ten unassisted. It is after this point that many children are forced into manual labour, even if their school results are very good. The constraints of poverty fuels the temptation to earn money immediately, however, Come-Share enables selected children to develop their skills and improve their employment range and earning capacity.
It is amazing to see how so little can stretch so far. It costs just AU$6.27, £2.54, US$4.81 per month to provide one student with further education opportunities and just AU$100, £40, US$77 a month to pay for a degree such as hotel management or computer studies. The project has a strong focus on sustainability, with the long term aim being that past beneficiaries of Come-Share will reinvest time and money into the program to ensure its reach.
Beneficiaries
Last year, 392 students were assisted through individual grants, group support or computer training. Group support allowed for the provision of educational materials to 138 children last year. Two computer training centres are supported, where students become proficient not only in basic computer skills but in operating systems including MS word, Access and Excel. Further to this, there has been the introduction of graphics and design packages such as Microsoft FrontPage and html training. This provides a fantastic foundation for students to further their skills and thus sets them up well for higher education or skilled employment.
Presentation of computers, 2001
At the end of 2005 one student completed his management course and now has a job in HR. Eight students are currently perusing studies in accounting, computer science, management and engineering. One child living in a town that was badly affected by the 2004 tsunami did extremely well in his O level (year eleven) exams and is eligible to complete his A level science stream at one of the best schools in Colombo.

Take up of electronic acceptances: Online or paper-based?
It seems like an eternity since typewriter ribbons and passbooks gave way to e-communication and e-banking. In fact e-business generally has become second nature to most of us. What then is holding back the take-up of online IPO applications?
Online IPOs offer issuers and potential investors a simple and cost effective application process. But despite the many benefits of online IPOs many companies and prospective investors still opt for manual paper-based application processes.
Whilst one barrier to online take up for issuers has been resolved by the introduction of compulsory online viewing of the prospectuses prior to payment via BPay, there is no doubt that a perception remains among issuers that online processes are riskier.
Today, around only 30% of investors are registering online when both options are available - evidence that investors still find comfort in the familiarity of older ways of doing things.
But the benefits of online service delivery should not be dismissed lightly. Online data capture offers increased data integrity as information is entered directly electronically and not via handwritten script. It also creates tremendous opportunity for the provision of shareholder analysis. In addition, electronic payment receipt ensures quicker access to funds and surety of payment thus taking away the risk of dishonoured cheques.
Capturing shareholder data in this way can assist in developing a lifetime electronic relationship with a shareholder using the IPO as the starting point. This results in faster, more convenient and effective communication with shareholders, a low risk service offering and long term cost and time efficiencies for issuers.
Applicants, too, share in the benefits. More convenient application process for shareholders makes it quick and easy to apply over the internet, any time day or night. This offers shareholders the opportunity to experience the ease of online communication first hand.
An example of electronic communication at work is the highly successful global Computershare ‘eTree’ project. Locally this initiative is supported by Landcare Australia and provides an environmental incentive to shareholders to elect to receive their company communications electronically, rather than in paper form.
Perhaps failure to take advantage of technology is a generational thing. Maybe it’s a simple case of force of habit. Or perhaps issuers haven’t quite grasped the potential of online service delivery. One thing is certain, though, it can’t be long before paper application processes – like bank passbooks – are a fleeting memory.
Technological advancements may make life easier for proxy voters, but at what cost?
Is technology the way forward for AGMs, or does it detract from the process?
Recent technological advances raise the possibility of replacing proxy voting with direct voting systems. Direct voting would give shareholders the opportunity to exercise their vote directly – either by post, fax, phone or online – even if they cannot attend a shareholders meeting.
The advantage of direct voting is that it can remove the occasional problems that can plague the proxy system, for example removing the risk of an appointed proxy failing to submit proxy votes on behalf of shareholders (need we remind you of the highly publicised Nick Whitlam – NRMA litigation?).
But it’s not all good news. The flipside is that shareholders aren’t privy to information that may affect their voting decision that surfaces after they cast their vote or during an AGM, which is probably contributing to why companies and shareholders are not taking the bait.
Currently, only around 13% of companies utilise existing proxy voting technology, and of those that do, few are seeing results. At the recent AGM for a leading financial institution only around 100 out of a possible 45,000 shareholders submitted proxies online. A paltry 0.002% take up!
There are a number of ways to enhance the direct vote offering by using technology to expand the availability of information (including online conferencing and real time downloading). Equally, the possibility that direct voting methods may in some way disenfranchise shareholders without access to online services may be overcome by the availability of other media – for instance technology already exists for phone voting.
Additionally, the recent Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services took detailed submissions from a range of industry participants. The May 2005 report made a firm recommendation that the Treasurer investigate direct voting and the full implications of its widespread use. It also suggested that the Treasurer investigate how its greater use might be encouraged.
Whilst technology is laying the foundation for Direct Voting, it seems improvements in availability of information will need to progress before shareholders will trust the bait enough to take the hook.

When passed, so-called Anti-Money Laundering laws are likely to have a far-reaching impact on the equities industry.
In the wake of the 9/11 and Bali terrorist attacks and in response to organised crime, the Australian government – like many other governments around the world – is closely examining what can be done legally to help it identify the source of funding for criminals and terrorist groups. It is expected that the outcome of its review of anti-money laundering measures will cast a wide legislative net to allow authorities and regulators to investigate not just the laundering of cash but also examine any other asset that is capable of transfer for value. It is very likely this will include equities.
The Australian government has made a commitment to comply with the Financial Actions Task Force (“FATF”) 40+ 8 recommendations. The FATF is an inter-governmental body designed to develop and promote policies at national and international levels to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. Among other things, these recommendations – which have already been adopted into legislation in the UK and the US – require that financial institutions identify their clients and the source of their clients’ wealth.
For share registries that receive funds from prospective shareholders (during a Capital Raising for example), this could mean that every potential investor will need to be scrutinised to ensure that received funds are not the proceeds of or likely to be used towards crime.
Anti-Money Laundering laws are also likely to require that companies and financial institutions monitor and record suspicious transactions, for example, instances where a client has previously held only very modest shareholdings but suddenly undertakes an unexpected or unusual share purchase.
The extent to which companies themselves will be responsible for ensuring that they do not receive funds that are the proceeds of crime will remain unclear until the formal release of legislative review findings, but if international experience is anything to go by companies, share registries, banks and other financial institutions can expect to be inundated with a raft of new, intrusive, and strict regulatory requirements.
We will watch this space and keep you posted!

Internet fraud is a huge concern for all businesses but especially for those in the financial sector. In recent times ‘phishing’ has emerged as a particularly significant problem. What is phishing and what does it mean for publicly listed companies?
Phishing occurs when an online fraudster assumes an organisation’s identity by sending misleading emails or planting dummy websites to convince unsuspecting victims to divulge personal financial details. The fraudster will use the victim’s supplied information to misappropriate funds. In Australia, the number of complaints received by ASIC in April and May 2005 was double the amount received in February and March this year. It is definitely a troubling trend. In recent times, many companies and financial institutions have adopted web-based interfaces that ask holders to enter their Securityholder Reference Number (SRN) or Holder Identification Number (HIN) to access their information. SRN’s/ HIN's are unique identification numbers issued to securityholders to allow access to personal shareholding information. Provision of a valid SRN also allows securityholders to transfer or sell stock – just the sort of information phishing fraud thrives on. Despite considerable success in the development of anti-spam and anti-phishing software, ASIC and other experts agree that the best safeguard is for companies to actively encourage securityholders to be cautious. To combat phishing, Computershare encourages companies to take active steps to communicate some basic precautions to securityholders. These are:
One final way to help curtail phishing is for companies to encourage securityholders to report it. Companies and securityholders should be asked to register any concerns at ASIC’s ‘watchdog’ website, www.fido.gov.au or call ASIC 1300 300 630.Main sources: Australian Bankers Association - Australian Hi Tech Crime Centre Fact Sheet: Protecting Your Information Online; www.asic.gov.au; www.antiphishing.org

By the age of fifteen he was completely blind in one eye, with a trachoma developing in the other.
Even after losing sight in his right eye, Balcha was a hard working farmer. He produced various cereals such as sorghum, barley, ‘tef’ (a local staple food), and beans. He also raised animals such as oxen, cows, donkeys and chicken. His tireless work on the farm meant that his family were well looked after.
After losing sight in his other eye, however, he was unable to tend to his farm.
“After I lost the first eye, the other also continued aching. Gradually, I could not see things clearly – I had blurred vision. Eventually, I had to stop working on my field and sit home idly for ten years,” he recalls.
Balcha tends to his field
He and his family had to pay or beg others to tend the field and produce food for them. Balcha went to various clinics over the years and spent a lot of money.
“I totally lost hope that my eye would heal” comments Balcha.
When he heard of World Vision’s Mobile Eye Clinic, Balcha did not expect much. “When I was asked to go to the clinic, I did not believe that they would solve my problem” he explains.
To his sheer relief and amazement the treatment was a complete success. “I can now see clearly and do not have any pain in my eye,” he rejoices.
Balcha collecting his corn
Mulugeta Ayalew, who is the Mobile Eye Clinic Project facilitator, operated on Balcha’s eye.
“The first time I saw him was when he came to the mobile clinic. He had already lost one eye and the other was suffering from trachoma, which could lead to blindness if untreated. In fact, he came to me being led by another person. I feel great satisfaction to now see him walking around without fear of tumbling down”
When asked what makes him most happy about his healing, he says, “I can now plough my field myself. I don’t have to pay other people or beg them to work on my field, which was always embarrassing; I can do it myself. I am happy that I am healed and can work on my field.”
Dimbushe Bose, Balcha’s wife, also has another thing to rejoice about: “The money we paid for others to work on our field is now being used to buy additional food items for our children and ourselves.”
Now, at 60, Balcha has a new lease on life.

(SG) It was a great opportunity to travel to somewhere I had never been before in a really unique way… and to be off for two weeks during tax season... (laughs) (LK) I have a background in International Development studies and my concern for and interest in the manner in which “development” and “progress” are presented and implemented in those “lesser developed or under developed” areas of the world continues and I am very interested to see CARE's approach to this. (TD) I really wanted to see where the money we've all been donating has been going and what kind of impact it is making to the selected communities.
Over the past year some fantastic initiatives have come out of the Computershare head office in Melbourne, allowing funds to be redirected to Change a Life:
What is evident from these two examples is that Computershare is serious about its commitment to Change a Life. The company, however, is now reliant on its many stakeholders to show their support by donating to the cause. Change a Life grants the global Computershare community the opportunity to unite in their fight against poverty; after all, it's all about participation!
Computershare has selected 23 employees from six countries around the globe to participate in a Cycling Challenge throughout Laos, Southeast Asia. This presents a once in a lifetime opportunity for the chosen employees to come together in support of the Change a Life initiative, specifically the project in Laos managed by CARE Australia. Participants will be cycling roughly 450kms through the hills of Laos, where they will visit the project that will be directly benefiting from their fundraising efforts. Each participant has pledged to raise A$5,000, which will go directly to CARE, with a total fundraising target of over A$100,000!
This money will go towards improving the livelihood of some of the poorest communities in Laos. The Challenge also provides the opportunity for people outside the business to support the CARE project by sponsoring participants in their fundraising efforts. In most cases donations will be tax deductible. The Cycling Challenge also aims to raise awareness of the Change a Life initiative by promoting the importance of poverty alleviation to employees, business partners and family and friends of the participants.
If you are interested in supporting the participants or have any further questions, please email changealife@computershare.com.au, or click on one of the giving sites listed below if available in your region.

Mulugeta Ayalew, getting ready to operate
Over 4,000 cases were screened to distinguish cases of Trachomatous Trichiasis (TT) and active trachoma and 477 procedures were undertaken.
1,592 active trachoma cases were treated using TTC eye ointment. Most of the cases were treated at health units, with the remainder treated in the community by health workers trained by the clinic.
Staff screening and diagnosing
A three day training workshop was held for 22 community health workers (CHWs), with topics including:
People queuing for treatment
12,570 school children and community members were trained to prevent and identify trachoma through lecture and drama shows. Topics included trachoma transmission and methods of preventing trachoma at community level through face washing, avoiding flies, personal hygiene and environmental improvement.
In a recent monitoring visit, a World Vision Australia staff member found that the project is very tangibly releasing people from immense pain and rapid onset of irreversible blindness and treatment is reaching remote areas in the south of the country that would not otherwise be accessed.
Young mother with her four children
It only took two years for this young mother to go blind.
Until the health workers visited the village no-one had ever heard of trachoma. Whilst it was terrifying to be blinded and the dependency on her family was distressing, the idea of an operation to treat it had its own trepidations. As with virtually all trachoma procedures the operation was a success.
Now her community knows about the disease and how to prevent it, they are mobilising to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Unfortunately, too many people still need radical treatment. Over the next year, because of Computershare’s generous support, World Vision will educate over 25,000 people, screen 7,500 cases, treat over 5,000 and undertake over 500 operations to arrest blindness.
Team Computershare cycles along the highway
Highlights shared from a trip many have marked as one of their most memorable and challenging.
The challenge began well before the cycling when it was quickly discovered that not all members of the team had made it to the sleepy capital of Vientiane. With snow storms affecting the flights departing from New York we were down three cyclists already! We all gave a sigh of relief when the ‘missing three’ finally arrived just before midnight, but they had a daunting task ahead of them, having to battle jet lag and 40 degree heat in just hours.
Cooling down in the river after a long day riding
Sharing a lively breakfast in our Computershare-lycra was a quick way to realise that there was no way we were going to blend in as we cycled along. The absolute highlight over the six days cycling, were the children we met along the way. “As you pass through each village, the children rush out to wave and shout “Sabaai-dii” (hello). If you give them a 'high-five', they’re just so happy, like you’ve made their day. It’s fantastic, but pretty humbling that a few people in tight shorts are treated like celebrities (D-list celebrities admittedly).” Stuart Todd It takes serious coordination to slow down, lean over and 'high-five' rows of children, a skill that becomes harder and harder the more exhausted you become… Harry from Australia struggled with this and ended up flying over his handlebars!
Three hour boat ride to the village
As we cycled further north towards Luang Prabang the riding became even harder, one day included a 17km unrelenting hill climb. The one thing that kept us all going was the thought of an even longer descent....and the men we passed carrying guns!
There is something refreshing about seeing a country by bike. It allows you to really experience each village as you pass through it, giving you the freedom to stop and interact with the locals. Our final day included a long bus journey, which made us appreciate just how much we had gained. All the sweat and tears were well worth the privilege of experiencing Laos by bike.
Hiking in single file to the village
We visited the project on completion of our 6 days of riding. Many of us thought that the challenge was over, we were wrong….. From the small town we stayed in we had to travel for 3 hours by boat, then trek uphill for almost 2 hours on a track that only allowed us to walk in single file, and actually crumbled away in some parts. We grew a new appreciation of the word 'remote' when considering that this is the track that women and children must tackle on a regular basis to bring supplies back to the village and to reach their agricultural plots.
Children at the village
When we finally arrived at the village there was a tense moment, as you never quite know how a village of 250 people will respond to 25 foreigners. What was to follow was quite remarkable. The chief of the village rounded everyone up. We were greeted with tea and hand shakes at the central meeting point, as children crowded around looking through the gaps in the walls. The Chief spoke first, he was humbled by the fact that we had made the effort to hike up the small trail. He also thanked us for the funding we are providing, saying that they need help to release themselves from poverty, as they do not have the answers. We were silenced by the impact of what he was saying.
A group photo at the village
They then brought out a recently sacrificed chicken to share with us. There were a few shocked faces as the chicken was passed around, it looked barely edible but it would have been impolite to refuse! We were then given shots of Lao Lao a very strong home-brew alcohol, while people moved around the room blessing us by tying string around our wrists to bring good fortune. Before we had a chance to absorb what was happening a generator had been wheeled in and a popular techno song ‘Number One’ was played on repeat for the next half hour as everyone got up and danced with each other.
“A surreal experience today, after 500km on the bike, a few on the bus, 3 hours on a slow boat and 6km hike into an isolated mountainous village, to encounter welcoming tribal elders, inquisitive children and a blessing form the whole community. This was such an unforgettable, culturally rich and touching finish. Good luck CARE with the project to be developed.” Dustin Teasdale
Through the Computershare Change a Life initiative and your support of our fundraising efforts, five villages like this one will benefit. For more information on the project in Laos, managed by CARE click here.

Computershare was established in Melbourne in 1978 to provide specialist computer bureau services to Australian share registrars. We listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1994 with an initial market capitalisation of AU$36 million. With a strategy to provide shareholder services to the global securities industry we expanded our registry businesses, entering the New Zealand, Australian and United Kingdom markets in 1997. During 1998/9 we acquired registry businesses in Ireland, South Africa and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong acquisition established our presence in Asia whilst considerably strengthening our position in the UK due to the high levels of cross-ownership between Hong Kong and the UK.Our global expansion continued in 2000 with acquisitions of the stock transfer business of Harris Bank in the US, the stock transfer and corporate trust businesses of Montreal Trust in Canada, the employee plans business of Merrill Lynch in the US, and in December, the UK's leading institutional share ownership analysis business, Citywatch. In 2001 we acquired Plan Managers Pty (Australia) and took full ownership of Central Registration Hong Kong Limited.
In 2002 we merged our Hong Kong share registration business with Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx), the holding company of the Hong Kong stock and derivatives exchanges and their associated clearing houses, to form an entity called Computershare Hong Kong Investor Services Limited (CHIS) to hold a major position in share registration services in that market. We acquired the employee stock purchase plan business of Charles Schwab in 2002, further strengthening our competitive position in the employee plans business in the US. Finally, we launched a joint venture with Deutsche Börse AG, the leading European exchange and technology organization to form Deutsche Börse Computershare GmbH to provide share registration and related services to the European market. In 2003 we purchased the share registry and employee plans businesses of Fifth Third Bancorp in the US. We also completed the acquisition of Georgeson Shareholder Communications, the world’s oldest and most highly regarded security holder solicitation and response firm. We also purchased a minority interest in the National Registry Company of Russia. In 2004 Computershare acquired Transcentive Inc. the leading provider equity plan administration and financial reporting solutions. We also announced our entry into the Indian securities and mutual fund registry market through the purchase of a 50% share in India’s leading registry business, now named Karvy Computershare Limited. We also launched eTree initiatives in Australia, the UK, Canada and the US, allowing millions of shareholders to choose to receive electronic shareholder communications in exchange for having trees planted.2004 also saw Computershare increase its stake in Russian registrar NRC to 45%, making it the largest shareholder in the corporation. Other acquisitions throughout the year included Alamo Direct (print, mail, tabulation and proxy solicitation specialist in North America), Flag (a UK employee communications company), and Post Data (electronic and paper-based marketing specialist in Perth).Late in the year, Computershare reported that it had sought regulatory approval to acquire US transfer agency giant, EquiServe. In 2005 we finalised our purchase of EquiServe (now operating under the Computershare name), the largest transfer agent in the US, which added some 1,300 companies into Computershare’s client base, including corporate institutions such as Ford Motor Company, Exxon Mobil Corporation, IBM Corporation, and more than half of the companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Other important acquisitions included Post-Tech Direct Marketing print and mail solutions and transfer agent service provider Pacific Corporate Trust Company in Canada.
In June 2005 Computershare entered the Japanese market, signing a memorandum of understanding with UFJ Trust Bank Limited, for the establishment of a 50/50 joint venture to offer a range of investor relations and cross border transaction support services to Japanese issuers.

IML develops audience response systems suitable for interactive meeting events and is the leading provider of interactive services for AGMs in the UK. It has successfully launched in Australia, delivering the first example of wireless voting in the region, and will eventually be offered globally.
In January 2006 Computershare acquired SLS Group, a leading provider of annual general meeting services in Germany.
In March we acquired the transfer agency operations of Sun Trust Banks in the United States, and the transfer agent and employee plan administration businesses of National Bank Trust in Montreal, further strengthening our dominant position in the Canadian market.
Towards the end of the year, in October, we announced two transactions with BANK URALSIB, continuing our long term strategy to build a substantial market leading business in Russia.
The transactions gave Computershare a controlling interest in The National Registry Company (NRC), Russia’s largest independent registrar, and a strategic stake in Registrar NIKoil, Russia's number three registrar and largest mutual fund transfer agent.Last Updated March 2007

How to sell your shares
If you wish to trade securities and shares in the Australian securities market you will need to contact a licensed securities broker to arrange the transaction, which will take place on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).
There are a wide variety of stockbroking providers that you may choose from, most of whom can be found in the Yellow Pages or on the ASX website.
You will need to advise your chosen stockbroker of your particular share registration details, including the Securityholder Reference Number (SRN) for the holding, so that the stockbroker can convert the shares they have sold on your behalf from the Issuer Sponsored sub-register to the CHESS sub-register in order to settle the sale of your shares.
If your securities are already broker sponsored (denoted by an ‘X’ prefix on your HIN) and you wish to trade these securities you must contact the sponsoring broker directly.
Holder Identification Number (HIN)
If you enter into a CHESS sponsorship agreement with a stockbroker, you will be provided with a Holder Identification Number (HIN). The HIN is the identifying number which links your personal details to your individual investments in companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The HIN is used by your broker (or other CHESS participant) to group your holdings together on the CHESS sub-register (as opposed to the Issuer Sponsored sub-register).
A HIN is made up of the letter X followed by ten numbers e.g. X0001234567
The HIN provides you with additional security for your investments. This number is very important and should be recorded and kept secure, as it needs to be quoted in all dealings and communications with your broker and the share registry.
If you misplace your HIN you should contact your broker directly.

Recognising our responsibility as your company's representative to shareholders, we strive for the highest levels of responsiveness and service on your behalf, to create the best possible impression of your company and contribute to your total shareholder service efforts. And to ensure quality, efficiency and accuracy of service, we use third-party measurement to consistently monitor transactions, processes and investor contacts.
Maintenance of a company's share register has traditionally been viewed only from a cost perspective, as a necessary expense required under industry regulation. However ComputersharePepper provide a fresh approach to the management of relationships with private shareholders that can unlock the value of this neglected resource.
Our intelligent SRM services provide the dual opportunity to minimise costs and maximise revenue from your share register. Pioneering initiatives such as electronic communications, loyalty schemes and marketing campaigns provide enormous scope not only for cost savings and increased efficiencies, but also for developing profitable shareholder relations.
SRM campaigns developed by ComputersharePepper drive targeted and personalised communications that achieve results. By enhancing registry data, integrating it with other company data and analysing the integrated profiles, SRM campaigns are able to target the right individuals, with the right message at the right time and through the right channel. This process is proven to greatly increase both efficiency and success rates in campaigns to ensure your communication has maximum effect.
At Computershare we appreciate the importance of an integrated approach to shareholder relations and can provide full service communication capabilities, from strategic and operational planning through to execution. This comprehensive offering ensures each element of a campaign works together seamlessly to support your objectives and helps you to realise the full potential value of profitable interaction with shareholders.
Computershare has recognised the need to develop new areas of expertise due to the emergence in the UK of non-registry products such as Covered Warrants, Depository Interests and Open Ended Investment Companies ('OEICs').
Covered warrants are financial instruments with a fixed expiry date, issued by investment banks, over underlying assets which will normally be securities or indices. They give the investor the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the underlying asset at a pre-determined price on or before the expiry date. Investors will be able to take advantage of movements in the price of the underlying asset without risking so much capital. Covered warrants can be stock or cash settled, as determined in advance by the issuer, and may or may not allow for early expiry.
Computershare can assist issuers with the set up and launch of Covered Warrants in the UK as well as the continuing register maintenance and management of the entire cash/stock settled expiry processes.
Open Ended Investment Companies ('OEICs') have been familiar in continental Europe and offshore financial centres for some time and more recently their numbers have been increasing in the UK. Unit Trust members must approve the conversion to an OEIC via an Extraordinary General Meeting ('EGM'). An EGM is required for each fund which is to be converted, which may result in a large number of EGMs being held in the space of a few days.
Computershare recognises that some Asset Management companies may require assistance in carrying out this activity and as a result has developed a service which removes some of their logistical concerns.
Our assistance can range from:
Computershare can also assist with your OEIC Annual General Meetings once your Unit Trusts have been successfully converted.
Closed Ended Funds are investment funds which have a limited number of shares. Investment trust companies are closed-end funds. This means that when the company is established a fixed number of shares are issued. These shares are traded on the Stock Exchange and their prices will fluctuate from day to day according to demand and supply.
Computershare will assist with the set up and launch of Closed Ended Funds, as well as the continuing CREST/non CREST register maintenance, including any income distributions.

Viewing the entire market. Executing with total control. Avoiding risks. Exploiting opportunities. Today's era of rising complexity of financial products, increasing market volatility and growing volumes presents an enormous challenge. Initiatives by exchanges whether they be the introduction of new products, the creation of trading alliances, reduced settlement times or the implementation of new electronic message interfaces make the financial environment of the 21st Century a complex place in which to do business.
With Computershare's ORMS (Order Routing and Management System) Trading Platform, we simplify processes and provide the tools for you to stay in control. ORMS combines exchange feeds, tradable instruments and your firm's entire order book in a single screen. Your staff can transfer or delegate orders to other desks and offices in different time zones or route them straight to an exchange, whilst always maintaining complete visibility of order and fill status. It is similar to having a single global office and a single global exchange.
ORMS provides the ability to trade equities in parallel with derivatives, trade strategies across exchanges and exploit short term arbitrage windows. The opportunity to cross up within your own firm can be automated with ORMS. With delegation across offices, you can take advantage of extended trading hours to the benefit of yourself and your clients. You therefore remain competitive in a rapidly changing world.
Whilst electronic market access has contributed to an increase in trade volumes it has also caused firms to focus on IT strategies that maximise market share and minimise business risk. Whether the risks manifest as technology failure, an increase in costs, keying error or operational problems, the need exists to provide a satisfactory solution that addresses the risk issue. ORMS provides pre-trade risk management, fault tolerant software and comprehensive alerts that let you manage these risks successfully. A fully automated order execution cycle and a single user interface minimise keyboard mistakes and increase the order execution rate.
By replacing numerous expensive front-end trading systems with a single, easy to use technology platform your IT personnel are able to manage their operations far more efficiently. Training time for traders is reduced due to a single user interface, regardless of the exchange connection being utilised.
Computershare is committed to making the ORMS Trading Platform your foundation stone for success. Rely on the experience and world-wide reach of a global company which knows financial markets from the inside.
Software that cannot inter-operate with your other systems is like a car without wheels. ORMS is designed from the ground up to be open and flexible, to satisfy the need for global distributed computing and to grow as your business grows. Through these interfaces, ORMS is easily extended to integrate proprietary systems or embed your firm's business acumen, for example with specialised program trading strategies or technical analysis.
The front-end API provides full access to all ORMS data and allows your proprietary trading software to be easily integrated into ORMS powerful management functions. The back-office API offers seamless integration between ORMS and your firm's back/mid-office system, thus providing a straight-through processing solution.
The exchange connection API is a CORBA interface, which means the connections are not language or platform specific. Using a proven CORBA ORB, they can be distributed to optimise bandwidth constraints. Development of new connections to exchanges or FIX systems and maintenance of existing ones is fast and reliable.

ORMS exchange connection interfaces or gateways allow your firm to trade directly and immediately on an exchange or route to another market participant. Computershare is committed to providing solutions, not just delivering world-class software. We provide the full range of services from consulting to implementation and training and advice on operations. We ensure that our pricing models are flexible enough to fulfill the specific business needs of our clients.
Large capital outlays for new technology can be unnecessarily risky when things change so fast. Operating new systems and additional communications infrastructure can be an extra burden for your already fully utilised IT staff. Computershare can provide ORMS on an Application Service Provision (ASP) and subscription licensing basis. We set up and maintain the system and the communications infrastructure in our fully redundant data centres. The entire process of running ORMS is out-sourced to us. Our centre has independent telecommunications and power suppliers to provide extremely high levels of reliability. The telecommunications service is provided across our partner-provided secure extra-net (www.radianz.com), anywhere in the world, 24-hours a day.
At Computershare we know that one size does not fit all. Your traders know the look and feel they want, your firm has developed products and trading strategies and typically you will have legacy computer systems that need integrating. Our consulting staff, with the most extensive industry domain knowledge, can tailor the software to your needs, interface your existing systems to ORMS and configure the user interface the way you want it. We can also advise on or manage your implementation.
New systems always require some learning and can be disruptive to your staff. Our qualified instructors understand what this is like and can help smooth that transition. With years of experience in financial markets, training novice computer users up to power users, we ensure that your traders or systems operators are making the most of ORMS, fast.

ORMS builds on the newest technology available to the financial markets. Using the distributed computing model, CORBA based interfaces ensure that components such as the exchange gateways and data distribution gateways can be geographically distributed and scaled up when and where your business requires. Using the client-server model, the Trader Workplace makes maximum use of limited LAN and WAN network bandwidth. ORMS messaging is asynchronous so that trading is never halted waiting for any other system to catch up. With full SNMP support, these components can be monitored from any point.
The components run on any variant of Unix and we have several clients on Linux. The Trader Workplace runs on NT or Windows 2000. ORMS is memory resident to maximise performance and yet is not memory hungry: a typical broker only requires in the order of 100Mb. ORMS uses a Sybase relational database as it's persistent store but without impacting performance. Written in C and C++, ORMS is high powered and suffers none of the performance penalties that occur with some other languages.
ORMS security system is comprehensive and includes encrypted passwords, encrypted messages across WANs using SSL technology, and the flexibility to configure users to have access to specific functions. ORMS' fully redundant hot-standby architecture and dynamic load balancing between components ensures high resilience. This technology, originally developed for our ASTS product, has been proven in the mission critical environment of stock and derivative exchanges around the world.
Our clients include banks, buy-side firms and brokers in several countries. Here's what one had to say about ORMS.
"Computershare's ORMS Trading Platform has provided CBA with the solution to reposition their futures broking business within an era of rapidly changing industry structure. The ability to empower clients to manage the execution of their own orders has released broking staff to pursue new revenue opportunities."
Rod Thomas, Head of Futures Broking and Clearing Commonwealth Bank of Australia
The primary objective of a modern surveillance department is to maintain a fair and efficient market for all security market participants. A fair market is one where all market participants face a transparent set of trading rules which are effectively enforced and an efficient market is one where instantaneous exchange of securities for cash or vice versa takes place at the lowest possible cost.
The SMARTS market surveillance system enables an exchange to promote both these goals. It does this by providing the ability to quickly and accurately monitor and investigate the operations of an exchange.
SMARTS is a powerful adaptable system capable of serving both established and developing markets. Using superior data management facilities, SMARTS builds an understanding of the "normal" market behavior so that accurate alert algorithms can be created to identify "abnormal" behaviour. These help detect market behavior which may have an adverse effect on market integrity. Identification and analysis of suspicious trading occurs in real-time, allowing a rapid response from the surveillance department.
SMARTS is without doubt the world's leading surveillance software. In use by more than a dozen organizations throughout the world, SMARTS is on track to becoming the industry standard. There are a number of advantages associated with SMARTS:
SMARTS consists of a number of inter-related modules including:
The philosophy underlying Computershare's approach to developing and distributing SMARTS is that we believe an exchange or regulator's role should focus on being pro-active. One way to do this is to educate market participants about the power of the surveillance system in an attempt to prevent undesirable behavior. Another way is to create a forum for the exchange of surveillance information on a global basis. Computershare facilitates such information transfer by organising regular user group conferences and producing and distributing regular surveillance newsletters to SMARTS clients that provide case studies, helpful hints on uses of SMARTS and other relevant surveillance information. This is achieved through a close association with the Securities Industry Research Centre for Asia/Pacific, (SIRCA).
For additional information please contact Computershare at info@Computershare.com.au
One of the great advantages of SMARTS is that users can manage large volumes of historical data in a meaningful way, at high speed. This is largely achieved because the SMARTS database has been specifically designed for use with financial markets data. The underlying database access procedures and time-critical operations are written in C while the GUI front end is written in C++.
SMARTS currently runs on any open access UNIX or Windows NT/2000/XP platform with the front end on Windows PC's. (Unix version of front end is also available). Workstation access to the database server is via TCP/IP.
The minimum memory requirement for SMARTS is 512MB. Recent tests indicate that SMARTS is able to process sustained transaction rates of 1800 trades per second. SMARTS can process over 50 000 securities in one database.
SMARTS uses a proprietary database known as MPL which is optimised for maintaining large historical databases and for processing data from real-time feeds producing millions of transactions per day. Comprehensive reporting and exporting facilities allow integration of SMARTS with other platforms such as Oracle and desktop applications such as Microsoft Excel. The MPL database is designed to integrate data from different markets and different trading engines giving SMARTS the ability to efficiently model any concept presented from different market places. SMARTS alerts may be regenerated for any given trading period, in whole or in part, from archived trading engine data.
